Ratten und Maeuse im Parlaments-Gebaeude Westminster in London. (出典:2016年9月8日付ターゲス・アンツァイガー紙オンライン版) The British Parliament building Westminster in London urgently needs a renovation. Rat and mice live in the building, rain penetrates through the roofs and the heating systems are broken. The building complex must be repaired fundamentally; the Parliamentarians should therefore move out for six years. The two chambers of the British Parliament have to vote about the plan before Christmas. The huge construction project will cost 4 billion pounds; however, it could be a multiple of this amount at the end, is feared. An alternative would be to stay in the building and to renovate at the same time; that could take at most 32 years and cost significantly more! The sandstone walls of the historic building "Westminster" are crumbling and already today, 100 million pounds are paid annually for urgent maintenance works. Infrastructure, pipes and electrical cables are totally out of date; more than 3,000 windows have to be replaced. Most of the structures date back to the Victorian period. The fire safety needs to be updated; there is already a phone alarm number for the reporting of rats and mice. That became necessary, because it teems with vermin inside the building. The parliamentarians (MPs) should move out to the "Richmond House", near the seat of the Government at "Downing Street" during the renovation time. For the many of the MPs, it is said to be important that there are sufficient bars and refreshments available also near the coming working places, so that the politicians can relax themselves after the hard work.
