Weltweit erste Anlage fuer Kohlendioxid-Einnahme eroeffnet. (出展:2017年5月31日付ターゲス・アンツァイガー紙オンライン版) The Swiss "ETH spin-off" company "Climeworks" has developed a "climate washing machine", which can filter the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the atmosphere (air). It is the world's first commercial plant, which is installed on the roof of the waste disposal plant (Kezo) in Hinwil (ZH). The so-called negative emissions will be more important in the next decades, in order to prevent a strong earth-warming, say climate researchers. The young ETH-engineers founded the company "Climeworks" in 2009; their goal was to develop a method by which the carbon dioxide (CO2) can be extracted from the air. The current plant can take 900 tons of CO2 annually from the ambient air. A surface of 90 square meters is required for the complex. In the future, the machine will run 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The engineers do not provide any information on the specific filter material used. The greenhouse of the vegetable producer "Meier Brothers" is located just 400 meters away from the plant; in the past, the company bought CO2, which was delivered by truck. Now, the extracted CO2 comes directly in gas form from the neighboring plant of "Climeworks". The vegetable producer use the CO2 for the fumigation of vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, salads etc.); these grow much faster afterwards. "Climeworks" has to meet higher requirements for the purity of the gas due to the sale of the CO2. In Europe, the gas is usually a waste product from the ammonia production; the production of a ton of CO2 costs in Switzerland, including transport CHF 150 to CHF 250. The company "Climeworks" has ambitious goals; in 2025, the Swiss company wants to "wash" 1% of the global emissions from the air, which is equivalent to 300 Mio. tons of CO2 per year. "Climeworks" supplies individual modules of the system to the car manufacturer Audi and to customers in the energy industry.
