Currently, US-President Donald Trump has come under strong domestic political pressure due to the close proximity of members of his government to Russian officials. The Swiss ICRC-President, Peter Maurer, sees this as a possibility that the Russian-American proximity could improve the humanitarian situation in war regions. If the aim and the content of these contacts is to bring about an approach to the positions in Syria, the ICRC-President finds this a "good thing". Peter Maurer has just returned from his fifth journey from the war zone in Syria. Many of his activities were close to diplomacy; he is aware of the responsibility by managing a 154-years-old organization. This is especially about reliability; the word comes from the ability to create trust, says Maurer. He says that the "ICRC" has not missed "essentials" in the last five years, in any of the major crises, in Syria, Yemen or Ukraine, but has responded quickly to problems. As a representative of the ICRC in the Board of the World Economic Forum (WEF), he has been able to bring major humanitarian problems to the WEF-agenda since 2014. The esteem of the ICRC has since increased. The ICRC is holding open discussions with Syrian representatives, which will make it possible to carry out important missions in this difficult environment. The "Geneva Convention" also obliges the ICRC to discuss the use of chemical weapons with all actors in war zones. The ICRC's message is clear that the use of chemical weapons is illegal. Regarding to the US-contacts with Russia, Maurer says, countries involved in conflicts should find ways to harmonize their interests and find political solutions. A quarter of the ICRC's budget of 1.7 billion CHF is financed by the USA; as a cautious organization, the ICRC must also consider what is to be done, in the case of cutbacks. The ICRC maintains a very good dialogue with the US-armed forces, which has a long, but difficult tradition. Derzeit ist US-Praesident Donald Trump wegen der Naehe von Mitgliedern seiner Regierung zu russischen Offiziellen unter starken innen-politischen Druck gekommen. Der Schweizer IKRK-Praesident Peter Maurer sieht darin jedoch eine Moeglichkeit, dass die russisch-amerikanische Naehe, die humanitaere Lage in Kriegs-Regionen verbessern koennte. Falls das Ziel und der Inhalt dieser Kontakte eine Annaeherung der Positionen in Syrien bewirken soll, dann findet dies der IKRK-Praesident "eine gute Sache". Peter Maurer kam gerade von seiner fuenften Reise aus dem Kriegsgebiet in Syrien zurueck. Viele seiner Taetigkeiten seien Nahe bei der Diplomatie; er ist sich der Verantwortung bewusst, wenn man eine 154- jaehrige Organisation leitet. Dabei geht es besonders um Glaubwuerdigkeit; das Wort kommt von der Faehigkeit, Vertrauen zu schaffen, sagt Maurer. Er sagt, das "IKRK" habe in den letzten fuenf Jahren, in keiner der grossen Krisen, in Syrien, im Yemen oder in der Ukraine "Wesentliches" verpasst, sondern auf Probleme rasch reagiert. Als Vertreter des IKRK im Stiftungsrat des "World Economic Forum (WEF)", konnte er seit 2014 wesentliche humanitaere Probleme auf die WEF-Agenda bringen. Die Wertschaetzung gegenueber dem IKRK habe seither zugenommen. Das IKRK fuehrt offene Gespraeche mit syrischen Vertretern, wodurch es moeglich wird, bedeutende Einsaetze in diesem schwierigem Umfeld durchzufuehren. Die "Genfer Konvention" verpflichtet das IKRK auch dazu, mit allen Akteuren in Kriegs-Gebieten ueber den Einsatz von Chemie-Waffen zu sprechen. Die Botschaft des IKRK ist klar, dass der Einsatz von chemischen Waffen illegal ist. In Bezug auf die US-Kontakte zu Russland, sagt Maurer, Laender, die in Konflikte involviert sind, sollen Wege finden, ihre Interessen zu harmonisieren und politische Loesungen zu finden. Ein Viertel des Budgets des IKRK von 1,7 Mrd. CHF wird von den USA finanziert; als vorsichtige Organisation muss sich auch das IKRK ueberlegen, was es im Fall von Kuerzungen unternimmt. Das IKRK pflegt mit den US- Streitkraeften einen sehr guten Dialog, dies hat eine lange, aber auch schwierige Tradition.
